THE HISTORY

by Tom Ekkens

For the past few years, my evening routine is to come downstairs, sit in a chair across from my wife Joanne, and discuss today’s events and tomorrow’s possibilities.

There is a brown carpet on the floor, and the constantly shifting shadows reveal images of faces. Some appear human; others are bestial and even alien.

In the last week of September 2021, I changed the routine by bringing down a sketch pad. I began documenting these creatures by drawing one each evening, sometimes two. As the weeks rolled by, and the entities revealed themselves, I set a couple of rules: no erasures and no tweaking the completed creatures.

These faces percolate to the surface of a 5’ x 8’ fertile area of carpet, tempting my artistic eye. I am the medium through which they emerge, releasing their spirits from the darkness below. Each creature has a story yet to be told.

THE FUTURE

by Joanne Shwed

As I focus on a Carpet Creature, I try to feel its energy and receive its story.

Tom and I invite you (and anyone you know, of any age) to use these creatures as inspiration for your creative writing imagination.

Select images from the Carpet Creatures catalog and write your reactions to them.

Write stories, poems, captions, or other thoughts in whatever format you choose, and add titles and/or names if you wish. There will be no judgment or critique about what you write. There is no right or wrong way to interpret them. Write about whatever you see and whatever you feel.

E-mail your writing (with catalog numbers) to:
carpetcreatures@taegallery.com.

With your approval, we may publish your writing in our Yarn Scraps newsletter.
