THE HISTORY

by Tom Ekkens

For the past several years, my evening routine is to come downstairs, sit in a chair across from my wife Joanne, and discuss today’s events and tomorrow’s possibilities.

There is a brown carpet on the floor, and the constantly shifting shadows reveal images of faces. Some appear human; others are bestial and even alien.

In the last week of September 2021, I changed the routine by bringing down a sketch pad. I began documenting these creatures by drawing one each evening, sometimes two. As the weeks rolled by, and the entities revealed themselves, I set a couple of rules: no erasures and no tweaking the completed creatures.

These faces percolate to the surface of a 5’ x 8’ fertile area of carpet, tempting my artistic eye. I am the medium through which they emerge, releasing their spirits from the darkness below. Each creature has a story yet to be told.
