Cicada Song

Houses spaced apart so beautifully,
Wide lawns framed by hedges trimmed,
Cicada singing summer symphony

On humid wings in shady black oak tree.
Pillars, white, cool porches rimmed,
Houses spaced apart so beautifully.

Smooth-trod paths of brick over bayou gully,
August downpour for a moment dimmed
Cicada singing summer symphony.

Portico of pleasant memory,
Cool floors ‘neath roofs broad-brimmed,
Houses spaced apart so beautifully.

A sigh dropped in cacophony
Of winged chatter, drifts among hymned
Cicada singing summer symphony.

In stately pose, standing proud, a trophy
Of inspired charm, history dimmed.
Houses spaced apart so beautifully,
Cicada singing summer symphony.
