The Dig

Beneath sands of deserts unrevealed,
Entombed eternally their diseases,
Written in evening's cooling breezes,
Released upon unknown tombs unsealed.

First, spirit rises restless, steeled
Against its soul theft, as robber seizes
Objects of ritual death, gold that pleases,
Bones and stones, pots and bronze annealed.

Five thousand years entombed beneath field
Of sand and wind, upon opening releases
(Second to spirit) microscopic pieces
Of ancient bacteria, dormant but never killed.

Smells of crypt-time dust disturb again
Lost plagues emerging from within.
